What's New from Basel

This year’s product introductions included technical innovations, new materials, and new styles.

CRYSTAL MEETS WATCHES
Watch brands don’t normally launch in Basel’s Hall 1. Swarovski broke the mold with a glittering booth to launch its new women’s watch collection. The Swiss-made collection has five lines, which range in style from conservative to strikingly modern, all adorned with custom-cut Swarovski crystal (of course). Retails of most styles are in the $500 to $1,500 range. The most unusual design, D-Light (1), which spells out the time in lighted crystals, is $1,500 in stainless steel, (800) 289-4900, www.swarovski.com.

PRECIOUS PORCELAIN
Venerable high-end German porcelain manufacturer Nymphenburg, founded in 1747, has a new jewelry collection designed by Patrik Muff. “Essentials” collection black and white porcelain pendants are set in silver or 18k gold and shaped as skulls, wings, crosses, and textured oval medallions with hearts, lilies, and anchors. Retail prices range from $75 to $3,700. A wing pendant (2), without chain, is $125, from Nymphenburg, (49) (89) 1791-9727, www.nymphenburg.com.

PAINTING IN GEMS
Mattia Cielo launched a new collection of pavé styles made in a modular fashion to allow custom designs and patterns in gems on pendants, rings, and bracelets. Stripes, plaids, pictures, or letters can be created and personalized designs are possible. The technique is perfect for ombre shading. Mattia Cielo’s micro-mosaic bracelet in a night sky pattern (3) in sapphires and diamonds in 18k gold, (39) (0444) 990082, www.mattiacielo.com.

TWO RINGS FIT ALL
Two Italian designers are launching new ring styles that adjust to fit different finger sizes in different ways. The “Magic Ring” from Roberto Coin has a hinge in the center that allows it to open and close to hold the ring on the finger. The new mechanism also allows for the use of interesting materials without sizing issues, like this ring (4) in jet with peach gold and diamonds, (212) 486-4545, www.robertocoin.com. The “Forever Ring” (5) from Mattioli has a screw that can be loosened to allow the shank to open or close, and then tightened to keep it in place, (914) 235-6261, www.mattioligioielli.it.

TIMELY DESIGN
The “My Time” pendant (6) from Bibigi commemorates a date and time that are worth remembering. A proposal, a wedding, a birth, or any other moment of your life can be depicted in black or white diamonds on the 18k gold “dial.” Custom orders take eight working days, and retail ranges from $1,115 to $1,315. GARDEN VARIETY
In Hong Kong, Japan, and now Basel, designer Sabina Lee is known for her floral jewelry. Now Lee is bringing Green G., her brand of natural-inspired designs, to the U.S., exhibiting for the first time at the JCK show in Las Vegas. “Endless Love” ring (7), suggested retail $3,470, and earrings (8) for $3,380, are 18k gold with white and black diamonds and delicately shaded purple sapphires from Green G., (852) 2824-6128, www.greengjewelry.com.
