Sex and the Akoya
Jewelry Scene

In the past few years, fashion may have favored trendy Tahitians, bold baroques, and fun freshwaters. But a funny thing happened to the classic akoya necklace this summer: It became trendy.

In the fashion movie of the summer, “Sex and the City,” the style signature of Carrie Bradshaw, played by style icon Sarah Jessica Parker, is a ladylike akoya pearl necklace. The pearls in the spotlight are a classic 32-inch opera-length strand of 8.5mm akoya cultured pearls by Mikimoto. With Mikimoto’s signature clasp in 18k gold, the branded strand retails for $11,900 at Mikimoto stores and authorized retailers nationwide.

Carrie Bradshaw wears the strand while announcing her engagement to Chris Noth, a.k.a. “Mr. Big.” She layers it with other necklaces while shopping in New York City. The strand is prominently shown in the scene where, while seated at her computer pondering feelings about love, she twirls the strand around her fingertips as if it held the answers to her questions. And in a scene that may help update the somewhat demure and traditional image of akoya pearls, she wears them in bed with Mr. Big.

The choice of akoya for fashion-forward Carrie follows fashion’s current inspiration with country-club socialite style. Dressed up tailoring has replaced urban street style on runways.

The movie version of “Sex and the City” takes place four years after the television series, so the characters and the jewelry they wear are a bit more sophisticated, too. During its run on HBO and in reruns still today, the series sparked many jewelry industry trends, including nameplate and horseshoe necklaces.

Since the film’s release, news outlets have called Carrie’s akoya necklace the signature accessory in the film and a major fashion trend.

“Carrie’s street chic gold nameplate necklace spawned countless imitators,” wrote Booth Moore in The Los Angeles Times. “Now, she’s rarely seen without an opera-length strand of pearls. Pearls were due for a comeback, and we’re betting this will help.”
