Patchwork Gems
Last Detail

Italian luxury brand Mattia Cielo, part of Italy’s Cielo Venezia 1270 group, takes a new approach to gems this season. Instead of cutting a gem to fit a design, they are building it up, piece by piece. The multicolor gems in the new “Invisible Cut” collection are cut to fit and joined together with an aerospace adhesive into one large stone, which is then polished into a seamless whole. The joining is permanent and guaranteed for life. “The junction is stronger than the gem,” explains founder Mattia Cielo. Gems thousands of carats in size can be created through the process. The pear-shape gem in this pendant is 36 x 68mm, weighing more than 243 carats. The jewelry in the collection, by the company’s award-winning designer Massimiliano Bonoli, is modern and streamlined, balancing the playful patchwork of the gems. Retail prices for the one-of-a-kind pieces range from $15,000 to $18,000. “We wanted to create our own mine,” Cielo says. “We’ve reversed the tradition of the industry. We first design the piece, then we create the rough to be polished and cut to the designer’s will.”
