Fleur Factor
Jewelry Trends

With the passion for charms and symbols still strong, it’s not surprising to see many jewelry styles featuring one of the world’s most popular symbols, the fleur-de-lis. But the passion for this stylized flower seems to have real staying power. Pendants and charms with the fleur-de-lis are popular, but we are now also seeing diamond pendants, engagement rings, and more important pieces.

Why does the fleur-de-lis rise above the competition, symbolically speaking? Maybe it is the continuing medieval influence in fashion and culture. Gothic elements are everywhere, from the runway to the Da Vinci Code. As a religious symbol, the fleur-de-lis represents the Holy Trinity or the Virgin Mary. It also appears on European coats of arms, flags, military insignia, logos, and even Boy Scout badges.

And the fleur-de-lis also represents New Orleans. Mignon Faget, who has designed many fleur-de-lis collections, reports that residents and tourists alike are emotionally attached to wearing the fleur-de-lis to represent the tradition of that city struggling to rebuild.

But research shows a symbol that is even deeper and broader than those associations. The oldest known examples of fleur-de-lis can be found on Assyrian bas-reliefs from the third millennium B.C. Surprisingly, the fleur-de-lis is common to all eras and civilizations, found on Mesopotamian cylinders, Egyptian bas-reliefs, Mycenaean potteries, Greek and Roman coins, Indonesian textiles, Japanese emblems, and Dogon totems. Political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and iconic, the fleur-de-lis is clearly here to stay.
