Fifties Fabulous

THE NEW NEW LOOK: With retro chic continuing to inspire designers on the runway and at retail, it’s not surprising that the focus now shifts to the 1950s, the golden era of American history. The stylized and understated elegance of the decade is making itself felt in fine jewelry and ready to wear. These days, the halcyon days of the Eisenhower era offer a welcome respite from the realities of our time. The same can be said for the era’s style, which underwent the revolutionary influence of Christian Dior’s New Look. Shape, silhouette, and color all merged to a dramatic effect. Fine jewelry had a heyday, too, with many of America’s greatest masters wielding an influence that still affects today’s trends.

STYLE ESSENTIALS: Bold and colorful looks with intense, often ornate designs, such as floral sprays, carved gemstones, and conversational motifs. Key necklace silhouettes include the bib and collar styles. Buttons, studs, and small drop earrings coordinate with necklaces. Combinations of bright colored gems with pastel colored gemstones. Emphasis is turning toward the extremities: bracelets of all types, big bold cocktail rings, and stacked cuffs. Larger millimeter pearl and diamond looks shine, especially in bracelets and rings. Black and white combinations return in any material. The overall common denominator of these looks: elegant, ladylike details—and attention to fine jewelry as the ultimate finishing touch.

INFLUENCES: Dior’s New Look • Hitchcock heroines • Grace Kelly • Suzy Parker • Lucy Ricardo • Seaman Schepps • Marcel Boucher • Van Cleef & Arpels • House of Boivin • Suzanne Belperron • Mauboussin
