Buyer's Choice: Best of Show
Time to fill in the niches


Although there isn't a trade show in existence that doesn't have its share of critics, there are plenty of vociferous voices complaining about the burgeoning show scene in Las Vegas. When Modern Jeweler's editors contacted retailers about what was hot at Couture, Signature Salons, Luxury, and the JCK Show, nearly all rattled off a list of show complaints and comments first.

True, it's difficult enough to accomplish everything any store needs in a handful of days. This year, that job was even more strenuous, but not merely because of the multiple show floors. Retailers tended to be looking for specifics, classifications, or items that fill or augment a niche business like one-of-a-kind colored gemstones, men's jewelry, rose gold, statement pieces, and necklaces for layering.

Such purchases reflect the growing demands of the consumer, one who is maturing in her jewelry wardrobe. And for retailers, finding that special item, collection, or gemstone is becoming a powerful way to differentiate and stand out from all of the competition today.
