Botanical Motifs Bloom at Emmys
Jewelry Scene

Blossoms, leaves, and butterflies charmed leading ladies at the Emmy Awards on September 21, 2008. Larger, more elaborately detailed pieces shined on the red carpet, with their larger scale toned down with blackened metal and vintage cuts and finishes.

America Ferrera stood out in a dramatic Fred Leighton 19th century diamond flower necklace, one of the few strong necklace looks of the night. Marcia Cross wore “Botanica” collection earrings and ring by Hearts On Fire and January Jones wore a dimensional diamond and blackened platinum blossom cuff by Lorraine Schwartz in addition to Kwiat diamonds in her hair.

Heidi Klum had the best jewelry at the Emmys, but she had an advantage: She changed her jewelry six times. Her best look was on the red carpet—a spectacular pair of Lorraine Schwartz earrings with lavender jadeite butterflies set in blackened platinum.

Other important botanical jewelry looks included Brooke Shields, who wore large drop leaf and vine earrings from Fred Leighton set with old mine cut diamonds in silver on gold and a brooch at the waist, and Debra Messing who wore 19th century fan-palm shaped earrings in blackened metal, also from Fred Leighton.

In contrast to the subdued palette for jewelry, Emmy dresses were often bright, including purple, blue, and even canary yellow.

The colorful trend was reflected in a few actresses choosing to go beyond diamonds and platinum in their jewelry, too. Christina Applegate chose chandelier earrings in ruby and turquoise to go with her ice-blue dress. Laura Dern chose long gold necklaces to go with her purple. Mariska Hargitay accented her canary yellow dress with yellow 19th century gold and garnet drop earrings from Fred Leighton.
