Modern Jeweler Suspends Publication

After 108 years of serving the jewelry industry, Modern Jeweler is suspending publication. We’d like to thank all the people who worked hard over the years to make every issue worth reading. We’d also like to thank the retailers and manufacturers who shared their time and expertise with our readers each month. We hope to find a buyer who believes in the future of the jewelry industry as much as we do. But even if we don’t and the August issue of Modern Jeweler is truly the last, we are sure that the jewelry industry’s strong community and generosity of spirit will ensure its recovery is swift and its future is bright. We’ll certainly miss being there to cover it.

  2. If August is indeed the final issue, then I’d like to wish Tim, Cheryl, and all of the contributing writers and editors much luck in the future. Modern Jeweler was a personal favorite of mine for years, and showed sides of the industry often not touched upon by the majority of the other jewelry publications. The Jeweler’s Roundtable was probably one of my favorite sections as it showed many different points of view from various retailers and e-tailers such as ours, throughout the country. I will miss it, and it’s staff of professionals, greatly.

  3. […] will be the final issue for the 108-year-old trade journal, unless a buyer is found.  Modern Jeweler Announcement July 20, 2009  National Jeweler July 21, 2009 Tags: Modern Jeweler This entry was posted on […]

  4. Reading Modern Jeweler was my entry into the world of fine jewelry many years ago, and you will be sorely missed. From monthly gem profiles with exquisite photography to trend spotting, Modern Jewelry was a valuable resource for retailer jewelers everywhere. Best wishes to everyone involved.

  5. Hope you find a good solution!

  6. I hope they can survive on the web with a small team, for sure the name and brand is worth a small staff to manage a reputable jewelry web destination. There are so many CMS (content management system) software products available that are very powerful. A team of 2-3 people could easily keep this business going and stay profitable. I hope someone in management considers that option.

  7. I have recently started knowing Cheryl and Tim and they are both extremely gracious and knowledgeable. I am sorry to see such a wonderful magazine cease publication and wish them all the very best.

“A battle is not Lost until You accept defeat!”
And you have accepted defeat for a battle that in my “Alien” opinion could have been won.
I dont know the circumstances and i dont live in the US, but I am very much aware of whats going on in the our Industry in US and Globally. I am a relative newcomer in my(In Mid 30s)and I currently live&work on the other side of your world in Thailand, nevertheless learning about the termination of Modern Jeweler really amazes me. I find it utterly inconceivable that a 108 year old trade Journal has come to a Halt. In an age where media, information, innovation and knowledge are finding solutions everywhere, you’re shutting down a century’s worth of wealth due to some temporary dust in the air.
    It’s sad.
    And I dont understand it.
    Nor do I commend it.

I was very upset to read that Modern Jeweler intends to suspend publication after so many years of professional editiong, following the need of the Jewelry industry, giving support and ideas to all of us. It’s indeed a big lose?

Modern Jeweler mangaement and owners are going through a difficult time, but they need to look ahead into the future and keep the magazine alive, because the industry needs it.
I’m calling Mr. Mike Martin, the President of CYGNUS Publishing to wake up and revise this decision, because we’ll all miss having Modern Jeweler around.

  10. best wishes to tim and the entire modern jeweler staff….. modern jeweler was a CLASS act - they will be missed

  11. Jacques Voorhees

I second what Bruce said. Tim and Cheryl are a class act and the industry owes them a warm hand of applause for all they’ve accomplished Modern. I look forward to their next incarnation.

  12. I just read the article, and I am so shocked and saddend to hear the bad news! As a relatively new designer, it was Modern Jeweler who first displayed my jewelry. I was, and will always be, proud to have been part of this elegant and trend highlighting publication. I will miss it, and I wish Cheryl the best!

  13. I have had the pleasure of knowing Tim Murphy, Hope Reiner, Cheryl Kremkow, Ivan Solotaroff, Jeff Prine and other fabulous individuals at Modern Jeweler through the years. This is one of the classiest, nicest, brightest group of individuals that I’ve come across in this industry and should they truly be forced to move on, they will be greatly, greatly missed!

  14. It’s never a good thing when the jewelry trade publication landscape is down to just a handful of quality magazines. Hopefully, it’s just temporary, as Modern Jeweler has its niche. And unfortunately, the first expense to be cut in jewelry is advertising (which is always a BIG mistake in my eyes). Perhaps a strictly online model will help bridge the gap to stronger economic times.

Sorry to say that. However This is just the beginning.

Publisher Tim Murphy is a great guy and poured his heart and soul into Modern Jeweler. He’s a class act.

How can this die? I still have the first Modern Jeweler books in my home from 1902!! My daughter became a gemologist because of Modern Jeweler. This is so sad, and I agree with a prior note that there must be another way. Maybe Vance should buy you back!

My years with Modern Jeweler were the best!! Tim, you were incredible - the best of the best - I remember Joe and Mike, Marcia, Laurie, Ruth, Grace and I - such a team! Maybe this could be the beginning of another entity - something bigger and better. As we all know - Modern Jeweler was the very best. Best wishes to Lorraine, Cheryl, Tim, David and all!

  18. Laurie Thompson

I am very sad to see such a classy and informative magazine leave the industry. My years with Modern Jeweler were absolutely the best. Good luck to all who have worked so hard over the years.

  19. Marcia Young

I am so sad to see this happen. Working for MJ was a wonderful experience, I learned so much from the writers and Claude Z. I truly hope something can be worked out to continue the magazine or the Web site. So much good information on stones, metals, styles, trends, production and marketing will be missed in the industry. Best wishes to all the staff! It was a classy piece of publishing!

  20. Dave Mertzel

After spending over 10 years with Modern as a Regional Sales Manager (retired in 2004) I can’t believe Cygnus would let such a classic publication just ‘leave the scene’. Yes, there are many trade publications within the industry, but each filled a very special niche and Modern will be missed by its loyal readers and advertisers. I wish the best to each of my old friends at the magazine and YES, as many of you have already said………….Tim, Cheryl, Jeff, Ivan, Hope (all a CLASS act) and many of the staff I have not had the opportunity to work with will all be missed. The best to all of you!

  21. It is with great sadness that I read recently of the intention to suspend publication after so many years serving the needs of the Jewelry industry and giving support and ideas to all. Indeed it is going to be a big loss to many of us!

Both, as a service professional to the industry as well as a jewelry store owner for the past 29 years, I always looked upon the Modern Jeweler magazine for inspiration, ideas, updates on the status of our industry worldwide, for support and for direction on the jewelry trends. Once is gone it will be missed dearly.

Best wishes to the entire Modern Jeweler staff who have always been a world class in my book. I tip my hat off to you all and cheers for a job well done.

  22. As a junior graphic designer, I have my first advertisement ran at Modern Jewelers Magazine a few years back. For this personal reason, I feel very sad about them being suspending the publication. Also, in general I wish the best of luck for all of the workers at Modern Jewelery magazine, no matter what their title are, and Hope to see them rebound from the economic situation that we are in today. We will miss Modern truly, as I am sure the industry is losing one of its best.

  23. Gail Wilder

I hope that you were continue as a website destination. Your content is too valuable to be lost forever!!

  24. Hope Reiner

Iam proud of all of my 15 years at Modern Jeweler. I worked with and met so many great people. Your comments are so appreciated.

  25. Tino Hammid

Although my contributions to Modern Jeweler’s Gem Profile stopped in 2008 I surely experience this announcement with shock. It was the longest continuous publishing relationship of my career, lasting from 1983 to 2008. I wish the best for all my old friends who have a place in Modern’s history.

  26. I strongly disagree with the first posted comment. As a designer/goldsmith I find the magazine to be relevent, fresh each month, and the articles very interesting. I looked forward to the monthly issues and the creative designers and trends featured. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK, you will be missed.

  27. How sad. I have drawn many inspirational thoughts for my articles here. I wish you all the best of luck.

  28. Good luck to all of you and I hope you land safely…. Modern Jeweler has been a good publication and it will be missed.

Is this the same Cheryl Kremkow, who on http://www.guide2jewelry.com posted 10 Dirty Little Secrets Your Jeweler Won’t Tell You? I agree with Abe.

  30. C. Davis

My Great Grandfather used to advertise in MJ- grand history of the Rag but a poor choice with E-I-C Cheryl Kremkow. She’s no friend of the independent jeweler and I won’t forget her 10 Dirty Little Secrets on the internet. I dumped MJ after I saw that and I urged my suppliers to do the same.

Oh, this can’ be!!! I so looked forward to reading the new issues. Modern Jeweler is such a amazing connection to the jewelry industry. I found every issue so inspiring. Maybe Modern Jeweler can just cut the publication down to a few pages that would affordable? Although it would be small, every word and photo would be extremely relevant and surely treasured. Let’s just hope that Modern Jeweler is going into hibernation for a bit, but surely it will be back!! Best of luck the staff. You’ll be missed.

  42. First we lost Professional Jeweler about 5 years ago now Modern Jeweler. It’s so sad but it’s a sign of more hard times to come. With metals at an all time high,we’re all hurting,it was only a matter of time before it hit teh publications. I hope it can do on lifesupport in an online form for a while until things pick up again.
Iwill miss it,it was an inspiration to myself and my customers.

  43. Modern Jeweler has been one of my favorite jewelry publications to date. I will miss you guys and wish you the best of luck in the future.
