Hollywood’s New Uniform
A look at the party pictures from Oscar night confirms what we saw on the red carpet. When it comes to jewelry, the new Hollywood uniform is an armful of bangles and cuffs and a bare neck, worn with a strapless or one-shoulder dress, usually embellished with beading or other ornamentation. The only individuality is on the ear, where there’s still a lot of variety: studs and clusters are becoming much stronger but chandeliers still have fans, especially actresses who like to wear their tresses long. Hoops and linear earrings also work well. So how does something like this happen? Do all the stylists wake up one day and decide it’s all about the wrist? (Modern Jeweler did do a fashion feature on the cuff last fall.) This wrist focus could be the most important jewelry style legacy of the Oscars. The balance and proportions seem to have shifted.
This trend (costume style) jewellery is ruining our industry. Demand of costume immitation crap that wannabes wear is soaring because they can’t be bothered spending a few dollars more on something in Sterling silver or 9ct gold. Instead, China’s factory owners reap the rewards as our independent jewellers suffer with loss of business. Get rid of it, I say.
This trend is now in style and it’s amazing. It’s very edgy and different. As we all know the traditional jewelry pieces that are designed for mature women are quit boring and the younger generation can not wear them. It’s about the style and design and I think Bochic has captured that market place.
I can’t believe anyone would complain about anything that promotes bracelet sales. I have done well with Chad Allison’s Wrist Tiaras, and with Hollywood and the fashion runways showing more bracelets of all types, that is giving my clients confidence to buy them. I say Bravo bracelets.
