Will the Bride Wear Black?

In its forecast of the “next big things in weddings” in the November/December 2008 issue, Brides magazine predicts that “white diamonds may delight but black is where it’s at this season.” The magazine says that the dark diamonds are most effective in a traditional setting. The spread features a rose-cut three-stone black diamond ring with a circle of white diamond pave around the center stone by Karen Karch.

If you trace all trends back to celebrities, you’ll have to blame this one on Carmen Electra, who sports a two-carat rose-cut black diamond and platinum engagement ring.

Will brides who haven’t appeared in Playboy really choose black to symbolize the marriage promise? In a market where every woman says she wants something unique but buys basic variations on a few classic themes, I doubt it.

Perhaps this should be filed under “reasons why you can’t depend on consumer magazines for trend advice.”

  2. Maybe this trend could be re-marketed as “mourning jewelry” for the economy.

I design and sell black diamond jewelry for the last 3 years in Athens Greece. It seems that this year black diamonds will be sold more than ever, since the marketing efforts seem to have created wide awarness and desirability.I have found this has been very clear at my sales figures since early september.

  4. Have you browsed or blogged etsy.com? I am seeing a great deal of trends, especially sustainable ones come out of the sellers who use etsy.com. I myself create Vintage inspired jewelry and sell on etsy and I believe it’s a great venue for unknown artists. I’ve seen a lot of black jewelry as of late.

  5. Black is a huge trend in jewelry design: not only black diamonds but blackened silver, blackened gold, and even blackened platinum, which Lorraine Schwartz is using. We saw black metal on the red carpet at the Emmys and MTV Awards. But I really don’t think bridal jewelry will be affected by this trend. Brides do want something unique but they also want something that will last: that won’t scream 2008 next year or next decade. No one chooses an engagement ring based on a passing fashion.

Wow that’s gorgeous. My fiance just bought me a gorgeous diamond engagement ring from http://www.idonowidont.com and my ring has ruby diamonds that surround it. Black diamondswould be too dark for me though I think but it’s a neat new trend, carmel elektra is a trend setter!

  7. I am a designer who has been creating jewelry with black diamonds over the past seven years! I’m glad to see that they’re catching on. Believe it or not we have a very saavy and loyal gothic lifestyle following and I am always creatively “fueled” by their indivduality. Black Rock On!

  8. I would wear a black diamond, I think that they are stunning, and they are becoming more and more popular.

  9. That’s actually pretty stunning. I really wonder if I had encountered that before I got my wedding ring if I would have considered it. There is quite an elegance to dark, exotic or gothic type jewelry.
